Hi Deb, thank you for your compliment and I am so glad this has helped you.

You just gave me a great idea for another video ... it will focus on telephone interviewing techniques.

Good luck!

Very good points and excellent tutorial on salary negotiating tips for the interview. I am experiencing a very troubling phenom for the first time during this prolonged economic downturn. Large employers are utilizing a single channel for submission of CV's for the entire staffing of the company and they are all using identical or very similar web based electronic CV submission software. This funnel does not permit the applicant to "distinguish himself / herself" during electronic upload of CV and cover letter. All positions across the company are being filled using this electronic filing procedure and the software requires you to enter a SALARY during submission of your CV. No salary NUMBER provided by applicant and no CV is accepted. You must complete all the entry fields before upload of the CV will take place. This means the HR based software can rank the applications based on who is desperate enough to "lowball" their salary requirements and they have it in writing with your CV submission. Dastardly and how to get around this dealbreaker data point?

I have been told that large company layoffs are taking place solely to allow company to churn out higher paid staffers and replace them with new hires at much lower wages. The process seems simple enough given that there are now at least 5 applicants for each position in many technical fields. Things are getting UGLY!

Hi Mary,

Your son will need a resume, so I would recommend he watch the resume writing video and use the samples I supplied on that page to create his. Since he does not have experience, he will need the resume to focus on the skills and accomplishments he has gained at college.

For example, he should detail his classwork/courses, list any groups/organizations he is a member of at school (especially if he holds an officer position in one of those groups), and he should list his GPA if above 3.0.

Retail (like Walmart) often hires college students, but he may want to target companies that fit his future aspirations. For example, maybe he wants to be employed with an Advertising Agency when he graduates. Well, using the techniques I show in "Jayobi: Step 3 Identifying Employers" he can target Ad Agencies now for a part time/internship now that will not only give him a job now, but experience for when he graduates -- he will be ahead of his classmates graduating with the same degree.

I wish your son the best in his new career!

What are people to do if they have never had a job--I have a teenage son (soon to be 19)--he has no resume--he is a college student. He would be willing to work for Walmart but no one is hiring.

Hi Christy,
You question is a common dilemma, so many people want a change (of industry/position) but don't really know where to go. One good place to start is by looking at the industries listed on the downloadable SIC code sheet on this page -- you may find something that sparks your interest. If you could let me know your background and current industry, I would be happy to offer my input and possible suggestions for you.

Hello Doug,
I really want to leave my current industry. That said, I am having difficulty identifying a position/ discipline in another industry. Do you have any advice on how to narrow it down? I have tried reading through internet job posting, yet cannot find anything that feels like a good fit.
